What is Reiki?

Where does Reiki come from?

Reiki, pronounced "ray-kee," is a Japanese word that translates to "universal life energy." This holistic healing practice originated in Japan in the early 20th century. Dr. Mikao Usui is credited with the rediscovery of Reiki, drawing upon ancient Tibetan and Buddhist practices as well as his own spiritual insights.

How does Reiki work?

At the heart of Reiki is the belief that our bodies are surrounded by and filled with life force energy, also known as "ki" or "qi." When this energy is flowing harmoniously, we experience good health and well-being. However, physical or emotional imbalances can disrupt this energy flow, leading to illness or discomfort.

Reiki practitioners are trained to be conduits for this universal life energy. During a Reiki session, the practitioner channels this energy and directs it through their hands, which they lightly place on or near the recipient's body. The intention is to restore balance and harmony within the recipient's energy field.

What are the Basic Principles of Reiki?

Reiki is guided by five fundamental principles, known as the Five Reiki Principles or the Five Reiki Principles for Health and Happiness. These principles serve as a moral and spiritual guide for practitioners and recipients alike:

1. Just for today, I will not be angry.

   - Emphasizes the importance of emotional control and inner peace.

2. Just for today, I will not worry.

   - Encourages living in the present moment and letting go of unnecessary stress and anxiety.

3. Just for today, I will be grateful.

   - Promotes gratitude as a source of happiness and contentment.

4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

   - Stresses the value of honesty and integrity in all actions and endeavors.

5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

   - Encourages compassion and kindness towards others.

These principles guide Reiki practitioners and recipients toward a more balanced and harmonious life. Reiki sessions are not tied to any specific religion or belief system, making them accessible to people of various backgrounds.

Reiki involves connecting to the universal life energy to heal and balance the body, mind, and spirit. By understanding its origins, how it works, and the principles it's founded upon, individuals can gain a deeper appreciation of this ancient practice and its potential for promoting overall well-being.

What's Your Prakriti?

Prakriti, one's natural state of wholeness, is determined upon conception. It's based on many factors, including the parent's state of being at that time. It consists of 3 basic qualities, attributes (called Gunas) and they are:

Sattva - the principle of light, harmony, balance, intelligence, and perception
Rajas - the principle of energy, being active, emotions, and chaos.
Tamas - the principle of inertia, the darkness, state of dullness, and resistance.

Our doshas dance with the Gunas and our goal is to maintain them in the Sattva (light) vibration.

The 3 basic Dosha (humours) types are Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

Our lives are ruled by these 3 and we strive to balance them and harmonize with nature. Most of us are blessed with 2 of 3 humours. Once we can deduce our original constitution, we can then begin to examine the dis-ease and how to balance. Which one sounds like you?

VATA - thin, lean, dry skin, dry hair, tend to have small eyes, low appetite, prone to constipation, very active - physically and mentally, insomnia or scant sleep, fast speech. Adjust easy to change, and may be indecisive, often worry too much and have a nervous nature. They are the wind element and the primary dosha. Like air, they are motion. Tend to be artists, creators, often daydreaming and the mind goes a mile a minute.
VATA qualities - light, quick, cold, subtle, dry, changeable, mobile

PITTA - moderate frame, moderate weight, soft or oily skin, hair is also soft and oily, sharp eyes, great appetite, easy eliminations, excessive thirst, loves competition, sleep is sound, speech is sharp and clear, tend to have freckles, they are the fire element so they are always warm, heated in all aspects. Pitta means "the power of digestion". Tend to be athletes, leaders, managers, anything business type.
PITTA qualitites - hot, oily, sharp, intense, acidic/sour; related to the color red.

KAPHA - large frame, heavy, thick oily hair, big eyes, slight thirst, elimination is slow, activity is low to lethargic, mind is calm and slow, sleep is heavy and often prolonged, and they speak slowly. They are the earth and water element, and refers to the power of cohesion. Tend to be the nurturers, the supporters, like teachers, counselors, doctors, nurses.
KAPHA qualitites - slow, heavy, static, dense, moist, wet, unctuous, oily

Want to know your dominant element in nature? Email me and let's get you started on your Ayurveda journey!

Your Dinacharya Challenge

It's that time again!!! Let's grab our favorite mug and start drinking warm water with your favorite citrus - Lime or Lemon. We'll drink this first thing in the morning, after oil pulling, brushing our teeth and tongue scraping. This will help us flush out the stagnation of mucous accrued during Winter.

Benefits of drinking warm water with lemon:

Drinking warm water with lemon is a popular health trend that has been around for centuries. Here are some potential benefits of this practice:

Boosts hydration: Drinking warm water with lemon can help you stay hydrated, which is essential for maintaining good health.

Aids digestion: Lemon contains citric acid, which can stimulate the production of digestive juices in the stomach. This can help to improve digestion and reduce symptoms of indigestion.

Supports immune system: Lemons are rich in vitamin C, which is important for maintaining a healthy immune system. Drinking warm water with lemon can help to boost your intake of this important nutrient.

Helps detoxify the body: Lemon contains antioxidants and other compounds that can help to flush toxins from the body. This can help to support liver function and overall detoxification.

May promote weight loss: Some studies have suggested that drinking warm water with lemon may help to support weight loss. The citric acid in lemon may help to reduce appetite and promote fat burning.

Freshens breath: Lemon has natural antimicrobial properties that can help to freshen breath and reduce bacteria in the mouth.

It is important to note that while warm water with lemon can offer potential health benefits, it should not be considered a cure-all or a substitute for medical treatment. It is always best to speak with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or lifestyle.

5 Ways to Shift Your Thoughts

Before I found Yoga and Ayurveda, I was a depressed alcoholic, who was tired, anxious and unconscious. My mind controlled me and I followed every thought that appeared. I tended to overthink every single action and word that was spoken to me.

Then, in 2008, I found yoga and it changed my entire life and state of mind.

Here are 5 ways to shift your thoughts, and thereby shifting your reality.

1. To effectively shift your thoughts, first you must identify what is causing you to think in a negative way. Is it a person, a situation, or something else? Once you have identified the trigger, you can begin to work on shifting your thoughts.

2. Once you've identified the trigger, ask yourself questions that you can use to reframe your thinking. For example, if the trigger was a difficult situation, ask yourself "What can I learn from this experience?" or "How can I make the best of this situation?".

3. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a break from the situation. Take a few deep breaths, step away from the situation, and allow yourself to clear your mind.

4. After you've taken a break, take some time to re-frame your thoughts. Instead of thinking about the negative aspects of a situation, focus on the positive aspects.

5. Take action: Once you've re-framed your thoughts, take action. Find something you can do to help you move forward in a positive way. This could be anything from taking a walk or engaging in a creative activity.

By following these five steps, you can start to shift your thoughts in a positive direction. If you need further guidance, contact me. You got this!
